How To Prepare for a Shooting Competition ? [Answered]

No matter how many times you have faced others in a shooting competition, the trepidation of the very first time you faced opponents in a battle to see who could outshoot one another may settle over you mentally and emotionally as a sheet settles over a costumed ghost. So completely can the remembered emotions alter the way you shoot, that some competitors have to admit they have to clear their mind in an effort to remember they have competed many times, and the first time no longer matters. But it does. No matter how often you shoot in a competition, the emotional memories of that first time will always be with you. So, what can you do to make sure you can move past the experience? Here are some tips to help you prepare for a shooting competition.

Makes sure you get to the area in time to understand the logistics of the shooting range. Wind, sunlight, temperature, and noise can all alter the way you shoot. A good rule of thumb is to arrive at least two to three hours ahead of the scheduled shoot.

You may have one of the best competition Glock sights ever made, but if you don’t sight in your gun after traveling, you may be in for a horrible match. Remember, the conditions where ever you are, even the afternoon or early evening light, can alter the way your sight works.

No matter where you placed in your last several competitions, if you have a chance to watch your competitors shoot, do so. Notice how they hold the gun, how quickly they pull the trigger, and if they have a set tempo. The more you know about your competitors, the better you can play the mental game waging inside yourself that says you can beat them.

Competitions are great experiences if you know how to make the most of the adventure. Relax, be friendly, and enjoy the experience as you make new friends you may have for a lifetime.
